PROCESS PAPER
I know that America has been influenced greatly by immigration, so I wanted to find out more about immigration in the early 19th century. After researching the different ethnic groups that immigrated to the United States during this time, I learned about the large amount of Irish who left Ireland. I was very interested in this particular ethnic group because I am half Irish.
First, I searched for general sources, just to see why the Irish left, and what they did when they got here. Then, I wanted to learn more about their influence on America. After further research, I learned about the adversity of the Irish immigrants during that time. Next, I wanted to find out about the events of this time period. I knew from background knowledge that the American Industrial Revolution occurred around that time, so I was interested to see if any of the Irish immigrants that arrived in America contributed to it. After much research on Google and Google Scholar, I could only find one relative source that was not a wiki. This was an article on all immigrants during the 19th century who contributed to the Industrial Revolution, not specifically Irish. In this article, I found that these immigrants, including the Irish, had influenced America in many ways. Next, I found several books that were relevant to my topic, including The Irish Americans: A History by Jay P. Dolan, which is one of my more important sources. After taking notes on some of these books, and beginning the rough draft of my argument outline, I decided that I needed more information on the short term political effects of the Irish immigration. I learned from one of my earlier sources that the Know-Nothing Party was very important at the time of the Irish immigration, so I decided to research this topic on Google Scholar. I did find one book that was relevant to my topic, however it was only a sample, so I was only able to view the introduction, which I actually found very helpful and factual. Then, while writing my paper, I realized that I needed more political effects, so I thought that the election that made John F. Fitzgerald mayor of Boston and the presidential election of 1960 that made John F. Kennedy president would make good examples of the political effects of the Irish immigration. I found information on these two elections in the two books by Jay P. Dolan, In Search of an American Catholicism and The Irish Americans: A History, and also Bibles, Brahmins, and Bosses by Thomas H. O'Connor.
Throughout the 19th century, the major Irish immigration influenced America, at that time, in many ways, mostly politically, economically, and religiously. The effects of this great immigration still remain today in the large Irish-American population, and the Catholic Church, the religion that the Irish immigrants brought to America over a century ago. These effects include events such as the Industrial Revolution, which is probably one of the most important events of the 19th century, and the election of 1960, the election that made John F. Kennedy the first Irish Catholic president, a high point for Irish-American Catholics, despite the biases towards them.
